What would it be like to be unable to leave your home without a male or a covering on your face? Breadwinner is a sad story of a girl named Parvana who lives in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Taliban soldiers have taken over that part of the country and force her and her family to live in terrible living conditions. When her father is arrested Parvana must cut her hair and wear boy clothes so that she is permitted to leave the house and buy food for her family. While in the marketplace Parvana finds her friend Shauzia working as a tea boy and finds that Shauzia is planning on running away to London, the land of the purple fields. When she gets home Parvana finds out that Nooria is planning on leaving Kabul and going to Mazar-e Sharif, to get married. Once they have left Parvana finds out that Mazar-e, is taken over by Taliban. Her father is released from jail and they both leave to find the rest of her family. Will she make it? Find out in Parvana's Journey
This book is sad but adventurous. It reveals the bare truth about Afghanistan and the laws that forbid many day to day things. I would suggest this to anybody who likes to read non-fiction with fiction combined. I would rate this book a 9/10. For another opinion read The Breadwinner.
About the author Deborah Ellis: Deborah Ellis was born on August 7, 1960 in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada. She decided to start writing when she was 11 or 12 years old. Deborah had to move several times due to her parents work. Review by Bonnie Taryn Reynolds
